What is GLP-1 medication?

A SengMed basics guide, reviewed by our clinical team

GLP-1 medications are a class of prescription treatments that help with weight loss by working with your body’s own appetite signals. If you’ve heard names like semaglutide, tirzepatide, Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro, those all belong to this family. Here’s what GLP-1 actually is, and why it works.

This guide is general information, not medical advice. Whether a GLP-1 medication is suitable for you is a decision for an MOH-licensed doctor based on your health.

What “GLP-1” means

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1. It’s a hormone your gut naturally releases after you eat. It tells your brain you’re full, helps regulate blood sugar, and slows how quickly your stomach empties.

GLP-1 medications are agonists: they mimic this natural hormone, but at a steady, longer-lasting level than your body produces on its own.

How it helps with weight loss

By amplifying signals your body already uses, GLP-1 medication tends to:

The result for many people is that eating less feels far more manageable, because the medication reduces the constant “food noise” rather than relying on willpower.

Injection or tablet?

Most GLP-1 medications are given as a small once-weekly injection using a pre-filled pen. Some are also available as a daily tablet. Both are prescription treatments; your doctor will help you choose the format that fits your life.

What it isn’t

GLP-1 medication is not a quick fix or a substitute for healthy habits. It works best alongside good nutrition, movement, and sleep, and as part of doctor-guided care. Results vary from person to person, and treatment isn’t suitable for everyone.

Is it safe?

GLP-1 medications have been used widely and studied extensively. Like any medication, they can have side effects, most commonly mild nausea, especially when starting or increasing the dose. A doctor screens your health history first and starts you on a low dose to help your body adjust.

How to find out if it’s right for you

The starting point is a health assessment with a licensed doctor. With SengMed, you can complete this online: an MOH-licensed doctor reviews your history and BMI and advises whether GLP-1 treatment is appropriate.
